Hello everyone, it is my great pleasure to share with you about a truly remarkable historical site - Giang Cao Village Temple. As a seasoned guide in Bát Tràng, I've had the privilege of witnessing the rich history and cultural significance that this communal hall holds.

Let's begin by exploring the evolution of the communal hall's name. Initially known as Đông Sáng and located in Gia Lâm district, it underwent a transformation and was officially named Giang Cao during the Đồng Khánh era (1886-1888).

Situated in the village of Giang Cao, Bát Tràng commune, Giang Cao Village communal hall is not just an architectural marvel but also a sacred shrine dedicated to four important deities: Phùng Sơn Đại Vương, Phùng Di Đại Vương, Hải Nương công chúa, and Tỷ Nương công chúa. It serves as a spiritual focal point for the local community.

Let's delve into a significant historical event in 1847 when the Van Giang dike broke. Giang Cao Village communal hall, with its wooden frame and palm leaf roof, faced the raging floodwaters and eventually settled in Cửu Cao village, Hưng Yên province.

The resilience of the villagers was demonstrated as they collectively reconstructed the temple using bricks, showcasing their determination and sustainable spirit.

In 1850, during the reign of Emperor Tự Đức, the communal hall continued to be a place of worship for the Thành hoàng, as documented in historical texts translated from Chinese characters to the Vietnamese alphabet. The Thành hoàng received royal recognition nine times from previous dynasties.

Today, Giang Cao Village communal hall stands as a testament to time, boasting a centuries-old long đình and a collection of ancient pottery that has surpassed the centennial mark. Recognized by the Hanoi People's Committee in 2002 as a city-level historical and architectural relic, the temple holds an invaluable position in the local historical and cultural landscape.

Giang Cao Village Festival

Annually, on the 15th day of the lunar calendar's second month, the villagers celebrate a festival at Giang Cao Village communal hall, commemorating the contributions of the four deities. This event is not only an occasion to honor history and traditions but also a wonderful opportunity for the modern community to connect deeply with their precious cultural heritage.

Let us together cherish and honor these historical values, ensuring that Giang Cao Village Temple remains not only a historical site but also a profound source of inspiration for understanding and appreciating the unique culture of the Vietnamese people.
